Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team, is set to assume his role starting with the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The series, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs, is scheduled from July 26 to August 27. The Indian team is slated to depart for Sri Lanka on July 22.
In a recent pre-departure press conference, Gambhir addressed various inquiries regarding the selected Indian squads for the series. One notable topic was the exclusion of Ravindra Jadeja from the ODI squad. Gambhir explained that the management’s decision aims to provide an opportunity for Axar Patel, hence Jadeja has been rested for this particular series.
Gautam Gambhir explained that Ravindra Jadeja was omitted to trial Axar Patel in the Sri Lanka series.
“Would’ve been pointless to take him and Axar for this short series. Either of them wouldn’t have played all three games. There is a big Test season coming up, he is set to feature in a lot of games. He hasn’t been dropped, very important” said Gambhir.
“I think we should have clarified this when we announced the squad. He hasn’t been dropped (but rested). There are a lot of Test series coming up, and he will be playing a lot of those,” Ajit Agarkar said.
