Ajit Agarkar, the head of the Indian selection committee, has shed light on the rationale behind choosing both wicketkeeper-batsmen Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for India’s upcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka.
Regarding Pant’s return to the ODI squad following a prolonged absence due to recovery from a serious car accident, Agarkar emphasized the selectors’ intention to carefully reintroduce the gifted left-hander across various formats of the game.
Ajit Agarkar unveils the strategy behind Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul’s comeback in India’s ODI squad.
The chairman of the selection committee emphasized that this strategy aims to reintegrate Pant into the Indian team gradually, ensuring he can rediscover his form and confidence without undue pressure.
Meanwhile, Agarkar noted that Rahul’s inclusion is part of a strategic move to provide him with a fresh beginning. He disclosed that the selectors have enabled Rahul to reset and concentrate anew within the revamped coaching framework led by Gautam Gambhir, taking into account valuable feedback aimed at rejuvenating the wicketkeeper-batsman to his optimal performance level.
Ajit Agarkar said at the press conference: “Rishabh has been out for a long time. So, we want to bring him back without burdening him. Someone who has come back after a long time, you need to bring them back in the scheme of things gradually. KL, one of the feedbacks he has got is ‘you’ve got to hit the reset button’.”
