Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has stood by the decision to name Shubman Gill as the vice-captain for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, encompassing three T20Is and three ODIs. This move reflects a significant show of confidence in the young batsman, signaling the selectors’ belief in his leadership potential.
Alongside Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, who will lead the ODI and T20I squads respectively, Gill’s appointment as vice-captain in both formats underscores his growing stature within the team’s leadership core.

During the pre-tour press conference ahead of India’s Sri Lanka series, Ajit Agarkar expressed his faith in the 24-year-old batsman, Shubman Gill, hinting at his potential to take on leadership roles for India in the times to come.
“Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a three-format player. Has shown a lot more qualities over the last year or so, that’s what we hear from the dressing room. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. We want to try and give him the experience, though there are no guarantees,” said Agarkar.
