Alyssa Healy has voiced her concerns about the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 being held in Bangladesh, citing the ongoing political unrest in the country. The tournament, originally scheduled for October, faces uncertainty as the International Cricket Council (ICC) deliberates on the possibility of relocating it due to violent protests that have resulted in over 400 fatalities.
“I’d find it hard to fathom playing there at the moment, As a human being, I feel like it might be the wrong thing to do. There are bigger factors at play than putting a cricket tournament on in Bangladesh right now,” Healy was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
The unrest in Bangladesh erupted over a disputed quota system that allocated public jobs to descendants of freedom fighters. The situation has worsened, with the United Nations reporting the deaths of at least 65 minors. Additionally, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country and resignation have further exacerbated the crisis.
For the Australian team, another concern is that Bangladesh is currently on the Australian government’s do-not-travel list. Alyssa Healy has also noted that hosting the tournament in such a climate could divert essential resources away from those in need.
“They’re needing everyone they can possibly get in there helping people that are dying. It feels wrong to be taking resources away from that,” she added.
The ICC is anticipated to soon decide on the location for the tournament, with the UAE and Zimbabwe emerging as leading contenders to host. Australia is not seen as a viable option due to its climate and limited preparation time, and India has also ruled itself out.
Meanwhile, Australia is progressing with its preparations for the tournament, with their squad set to be announced on Monday. Tayla Vlaeminck, who has recently returned from injury, and Darcie Brown, expected to be available after recovering from a stress fracture, are both in contention for selection.
However, the Australian selectors are seeking clarity on the tournament’s venue before finalizing their squad, as they aim to secure their fourth consecutive T20 World Cup title.
