Rohit Sharma capped off his T20I career in style by leading India to their second-ever World Cup triumph in Barbados last month. This victory completed Rohit’s unique achievement of winning the tournament both as captain and player.
Upon their return from Barbados, the heroes of the 2024 T20 World Cup received a warm reception in New Delhi after a lengthy 16-hour journey, followed by a grand celebration in Mumbai where throngs of fans lined the streets for the open-bus victory parade.
The parade culminated in a felicitation ceremony at Wankhede Stadium, where the Indian team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 125 crore for their championship-winning performance.
The day after, on Friday, Rohit Sharma dedicated the World Cup victory to the nation, marking a poignant moment in Indian cricket history.
“On behalf of my team and BCCI, I would like to thank the fans. For the last 11 years, they have wanted the trophy back in India,” Rohit said.
“As much desperation we had to win the trophy, the fans had it a bit more. Every World Cup win is special. So I’d like to leave the 2007 where it is. We showed the world how to win the T20 World Cup. And 2011 we won the ODI World Cup in Wankhede. 2013 Champions Trophy in England, again that was special!,” he added.
Rohit Sharma experienced near misses with world titles twice within five months last year. India reached the finals of both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023, only to suffer defeats against Australia on both occasions.
Despite these setbacks, Rohit’s resilience shone through as he led India to their first ICC title under his captaincy on June 29. In a gripping final, India secured a thrilling victory over South Africa, marking a significant triumph in Rohit Sharma’s leadership journey.
