Emotions ran high as India clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup title, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya visibly moved to tears after years of near misses in previous World Cups. Despite the intense moments, Arshdeep Singh couldn’t shed tears even after the final’s thrilling conclusion.
“I was very happy. In the IPL, I have played so many nerve-wracking matches for Punjab Kings that I don’t have any emotions left. Mai koshish kar raha tha but yaar aansu nikle nahi (I tried hard but just was not able to cry),” Arshdeep told The Indian Express.
“I watched the legends of the game… Rohit bhai, Virat bhai, who have achieved so much… they just couldn’t control their emotions. I was happy for them. But I don’t know why I didn’t shed a tear,” he added.
Arshdeep Singh took the ball for the 19th over with South Africa needing 20 runs off the final two overs. Despite the pressure, he conceded only four runs. From the outfield, he witnessed Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular catch, securing India’s victory as Hardik Pandya defended 16 runs in the last over.
“My heart was pounding. I was standing at sweeper cover. I got the perfect side angle view. When Miller connected, I thought it would go the distance but like in a movie it started to dip. The way Surya bhai (Suryakumar Yadav) judged the catch… As he said in the post-match interviews he just wanted to save the six, but then he realised that he had the chance to take that catch. He took that risk, very brave of him,” Arshdeep said.
