Pakistan allrounder Aamer Jamal has highlighted the distinct differences between the leadership styles of Babar Azam and Shan Masood. At 28, Jamal has experienced both captains’ approaches firsthand.
Jamal began his international career in 2022, making his debut in the home T20I series against England under Babar Azam’s leadership. He later made his Test debut in 2023 during the Australian tour, playing under Shan Masood’s captaincy. Although Jamal hasn’t yet made a significant mark in T20Is, he had an impressive start in Test cricket.
Despite Pakistan’s losses in all three Tests during that series, Jamal stood out with notable performances. Over the course of the series, he accumulated 143 runs, including a high score of 82, and took 18 wickets, featuring two five-wicket hauls, all while playing under Shan Masood’s guidance.
In a recent interview with Cricwick, Aamer Jamal shared his insights on the captaincy styles of Babar Azam and Shan Masood. Drawing from his experience playing under both leaders, the Pakistan allrounder highlighted some key differences. Jamal mentioned that while he maintains a positive relationship with both captains, their approaches to leadership are distinct.
He noted that Babar tends to adopt a more defensive strategy, whereas Masood prefers an aggressive approach. Despite their differing methods, Jamal expressed that he has developed a strong understanding and rapport with both captains.
“When it comes to captaincy, both have their own different mindsets. Shan Bhai’s approach is different, and Bobby Bhai’s approach is different. I have very good terms with both of them,” said Aamer Jamal.
“I have had good terms with Shan Bhai since the time I played first-class cricket. When I joined the Pakistan team for practice bowling, he treated me very well.
“Both have different mindsets. I believe Bobby Bhai is a bit defensive. He thinks about securing himself first. Shan Bhai is a bit aggressive. As captains, both of them understand you and ask about your needs and what you require,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jamal is expected to make a return to the field next month, as Pakistan prepares to host Bangladesh for a Test series. It will mark his first appearance for the national team since the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year in January.
