A heated debate emerged during the ongoing Global T20 Canada when the Mississauga Bangla Tigers opted not to participate in their Eliminator match against the Toronto Nationals. This decision led to their forfeit of the game, ultimately resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
The match had been postponed due to rain, and when the conditions allowed for only a Super Over to be played, the organizers decided to proceed under these regulations.
The toss was scheduled for 7:10 PM local time, with the Super Over set to begin at 7:30 PM. According to an official GT20 statement, Toronto Nationals’ captain Colin Munro attended the toss, while Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Mississauga Bangla Tigers, was absent.
“At the time of the toss, the Toronto Nationals captain was present, but the Bangla Tigers team refused to appear. The match referee explained the plausible consequences of the said action to the captain and thereafter the umpire subsequently called off the match,” read the statement.
The match referee informed the Tournament Technical Committee about the incident, which then unanimously decided to grant the victory to the Toronto Nationals. As a result, the Nationals progressed to face the Brampton Wolves in the second qualifier.
