Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has expressed strong confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, despite the challenging away conditions.
Hathurusingha affirmed that the team is well-prepared for the first Test, scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi starting August 21.
Meanwhile, student protests in Bangladesh have intensified recently, resulting in violence, arson, and property damage. Following the collapse of her government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has left the country.
Despite the ongoing unrest, the Bangladesh cricket team has proceeded with its tour to Pakistan as planned.
During a media briefing, Chandika Hathurusingha assured that his team is prepared to face any challenges from Pakistan.
He mentioned that the pitch in Rawalpindi is conducive to both fast bowling and batting. Hathurusingha also highlighted that Bangladesh possesses a robust pace attack capable of challenging Pakistan’s batsmen.
“We are prepared for whatever challenge Pakistan throws at us. The Pindi pitch appears favorable for both fast bowling and batting. Considering Pakistan’s selection, we have also developed a strong contingent of fast bowlers,” Hathurusingha said.
On the previous day, Pakistan revealed their playing XI for the opening Test of the two-match series. The home side will employ an all-seam attack, with Salman Ali Agha as a part-time option.
Leading the pace attack will be left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi, while young fast bowler Naseem Shah makes his return to the Test squad.
Chandika Hathurusingha stated that the inclusion of all-rounders Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz was based on their individual merits rather than the pitch conditions. He also expressed gratitude for the support and facilities provided by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their preparations.
“We expected Pakistan’s wickets to be different from Bangladesh and selected spinners based on merit, not just conditions.”
“We are pleased with our preparations and look forward to the challenge,” Hathurusingha further added.
Chandika Hathurusingha discussed his dedication to his role as Bangladesh’s head coach, expressing enthusiasm about fulfilling his term. He indicated his readiness to embrace any changes the board might propose, whether they involve adjustments to his role or a continuation of his contract.
At 55 years old, Hathurusingha took on the head coach position for Bangladesh in February 2023, with his contract extending through to the end of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Despite his commitment, Bangladesh has faced inconsistent performances, including group-stage exits in the Asia Cup 2023, ODI World Cup 2023, and T20 World Cup 2024.
