It has been nearly five days since the unforgettable moment at Kensington Oval in Barbados, where under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the Indian cricket team ended a 13-year drought for a World Cup trophy.

On June 29, they defeated South Africa in the final to claim the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite this victory occurring last week, the celebrations among Indian cricketers are ongoing and understandably so. India’s triumph marks an end to an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, a period marked by several close calls and disappointments.

Following their victory, Team India faced a delay in returning home due to Hurricane Beryl, which left them stranded in Barbados. However, they finally arrived in New Delhi on Thursday morning, where they were greeted with enthusiastic celebrations by fans both at the airport and the team hotel.

Before receiving a hero’s welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Rohit Sharma and his team enjoyed a joyful time aboard their chartered Air India flight. The BCCI shared clips on social media, capturing the players celebrating with the T20 World Cup trophy.

Upon landing in New Delhi, the BCCI posted a video on their microblogging site, showcasing the Indian players’ memorable moments with the ICC T20 World Cup trophy. The viral footage depicts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja unboxing, lifting, kissing, and carefully placing the trophy back in its box. Now, all the jubilant faces are ready for the grand celebrations at home.

Rohit Sharma’s achievement in winning the T20 World Cup holds immense personal significance, marking his final attempt to secure this title. In achieving this dream, he joins the ranks of legendary captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as the third Indian captain to lead the team to a World Cup victory. Alongside Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit has retired from T20I cricket, closing this chapter of their careers on a high note.

Hundreds of passionate Indian cricket fans gathered outside the airport on Thursday to welcome their victorious T20 World Cup team. Some held congratulatory placards and waved the national flag, creating an electrifying atmosphere with chants of “India! India!” echoing through the air. Special arrangements were made at the team hotel to accommodate the celebratory mood.

Escorted by two buses from T3 Terminal to Hotel ITC Maurya in Delhi, the players and their families were greeted with cheers and applause from the fans. Amidst smiles and acknowledgments, some players even joined in dancing with the enthusiastic crowd.

Reflecting on the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados, India set a competitive total of 176/7 in their 20 overs after choosing to bat first, propelled by Virat Kohli’s stellar 76-run innings from 59 balls.

In response, South Africa managed 169/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Hardik Pandya’s exceptional bowling performance, claiming 3 wickets for 20 runs and successfully defending 15 runs in the final over, secured victory for the Men in Blue.
