The BCCI is deeply saddened by the loss of Anshuman Gaekwad, the former India cricketer and coach, who passed away on Wednesday following a prolonged struggle with blood cancer.
During his international career, spanning more than ten years, Gaekwad proudly represented India in 40 Test matches and 15 ODIs.
Following his retirement from professional cricket, Gaekwad took on the role of head coach of the Indian team in 1997, leading them to significant achievements during his tenure. Under his stewardship, India achieved memorable victories, including triumphing in a tri-nation tournament in Sharjah in 1998 and witnessing Anil Kumble’s historic 10-74 against Pakistan in a Test match in New Delhi in 1999.
“The passing of Aunshuman Gaekwad is a profound loss for the cricketing community,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a statement on Thursday. “A true servant of Indian cricket, he will be remembered for his courage, wisdom, and dedication to the sport. His contribution to the game has been significant, and he leaves behind a lasting legacy. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Known for his unwavering technique and resolute spirit, Anshuman Gaekwad displayed remarkable determination against formidable fast bowling during an era when protective equipment was minimal. His prowess as a batsman at the highest echelons of the game is highlighted by memorable innings, such as his courageous 81 at Jamaica in 1976, where he bravely negotiated a challenging pitch against a fearsome bowling attack. Another standout performance was his gritty 201 against Pakistan at Jalandhar in 1983, where he batted for an impressive 671 minutes.
In addition to his illustrious international career, Gaekwad boasted an outstanding domestic record, featuring in over 200 first-class matches and amassing more than 12,000 runs, including 34 centuries and 47 half-centuries.
Beyond his playing days, Gaekwad contributed significantly to Indian cricket as a former national selector, member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, Apex Council Member, President of the Indian Cricketers’ Association, and a respected commentator and television expert.
In 2018, Anshuman Gaekwad was honored by the BCCI with the prestigious C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Anshuman Gaekwad’s passing is a great loss for Indian cricket. His dedication, resilience, and love for the game were unparalleled,” said BCCI president Roger Binny. “He was not just a cricketer but a mentor and a friend to many. The cricketing community will miss him dearly, and his contributions will always be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones as they cope with this loss.”
