The injury sustained while batting appears to significantly jeopardize Stokes’ chances of playing in the Test series against Sri Lanka.
The recent incident at Old Trafford on Sunday, where the first Test between England and Sri Lanka will be held on August 21, has dealt a severe blow to English cricket and its fans. England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, suffered a painful left hamstring injury while batting during the 12th delivery of the run-chase between the Manchester Originals and the Northern Superchargers.
Stokes collapsed in agony, prompting immediate intervention from strength and conditioning coach Harry Booker and physiotherapist James Pipe. They assisted him off the field and onto a stretcher before he was taken to an awaiting ambulance.
About an hour later, Stokes returned to the dugout using crutches and shook hands with the Originals’ team. This followed the visitors’ thrilling victory, spearheaded by Nicholas Pooran’s brilliant 66 off 33 balls, including a remarkable 113-meter six.
The Superchargers’ captain, Harry Brook, provided additional updates, and his response clearly indicated the seriousness of the injury.
“It doesn’t look great, unfortunately. I think he’ll be getting a scan tomorrow and we’ll see how he is,”stated Brook, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Meanwhile, a Superchargers representative adopted a more reserved stance on Stokes’ injury, stating that further updates would be provided on Monday.
“Ben Stokes is having his hamstring assessed. Further updates will be available tomorrow [Monday],” mentioned the liaison.
Regarding the Sri Lanka series, England is already missing Zak Crawley, who is out with a fractured finger. Dan Lawrence is set to open the batting in Crawley’s place, with Jordan Cox added as additional batting cover. If Stokes is ruled out, vice-captain Ollie Pope is likely to step up as captain for the first time in his international career.
