Sri Lanka is set to embark on a thrilling new phase in their cricketing odyssey with the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, commencing on July 27. Leading the charge as the newly appointed T20I captain is Charith Asalanka, backed by the guidance of interim coach Sanath Jayasuriya, an icon in Sri Lankan cricket.
Asalanka’s journey to leadership is steeped in experience, having captained teams since his days in under-15 cricket. With a keen eye on the evolving landscape of the sport, he is poised to galvanize the Sri Lankan Cricket Team towards unprecedented accomplishments.
The Sri Lankan team’s dynamic batting all-rounder envisions a future of constant advancement and development. As the newly appointed captain, he passionately encourages his teammates to elevate their performance daily. At 27, he firmly believes that striving for continuous improvement is pivotal to achieving success, both individually and collectively.
Reflecting on his journey under various captains, Asalanka underscores the invaluable lessons learned. His foremost objective as captain is to cultivate a supportive and motivational atmosphere within the team, aiming to harness every player’s full potential.
Charith Asalanka was quoted as saying by ICC: “From under 15 level, I have captained teams, and there’s been a lot of change since then. That’s what I tell my team members too–we can’t be in the same place we have always been at. From day to day, you have to improve and that’s how you become a good player or a good captain. I have played under many captains, and I have tried to absorb as many of their good traits into my captaincy and into my life as possible. What I really want is to get 100 percent out of my players, and to create a positive environment for them.”
With a keen eye on the team’s rich talent pool, the newly appointed T20 captain is resolute in unlocking their full potential and steering the squad towards triumph over India.
He rallied the Sri Lankan team to approach the three-match T20I series against Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian cricket team with freedom and self-assurance, emphasizing adherence to strategic plans without hesitation. The series kicks off on Saturday, July 27, in Pallekele.
Asalanka signed off by saying, “We have a lot of talented cricketers, but what is important is to get the most out of them and have them win matches. I have told them to play freely and when we have given them plans, to go out there and execute them without fear. That is what you can expect from me as a captain.”
