Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are currently with the Indian cricket team in Florida, but they are set to depart from the squad shortly. As reported earlier by CricketNext, they will not accompany the team to the West Indies for the Super 8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup. This change in plans is reportedly due to the revised schedule of the Super 8 matches.
Initially, both players were expected to stay with the squad for the entire tournament. However, the team management has decided to streamline the squad, opting for 15 players and four travelling reserves instead of the initial 19.
India’s Super 8 matches are scheduled for June 20, 22, and 24, with the possibility of playing the second semi-final on June 27 if they advance.
“There was very little gap between games for any extensive practice. So it was decided by the management to release the two players as matches are literally back to back and there is very little scope for marathon practice sessions to happen. Khaleel is already there to ensure the left-arm variety in nets if needed,” says a source privy to developments.
The BCCI has organized travel arrangements for Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, indicating they are unlikely to join the team at the venue for India’s final group-stage match against Canada on June 15. Only the selected squad of 15 players is permitted to be in the dugout and change room. This protocol was also observed during the match against Pakistan in New York, where Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, and Rinku Singh supported the team from the stands.
In Florida, consistent rain has persisted, and today’s forecast remains unfavorable. Following the washout of the USA-Ireland game on June 14, Team India also had to stay indoors, with some players opting for a gym session at the team hotel.
Despite winning their initial three matches, India has already secured their place in the Super 8s. However, prospects for additional game time before their departure for the West Indies appear dim currently.
It’s likely that India will fly to Barbados on June 16 via a charter flight, followed by matches in Antigua and St Lucia.
