Since their last title win in the 2021 season, the Mumbai Indians have been on a downward trajectory. They have a crucial chance to bolster their squad as they prepare for the IPL 2025 season. With the upcoming auction on the horizon, Mumbai will aim to acquire impactful players to build a formidable team.
The IPL 2024 campaign was a disaster for Mumbai Indians. They managed only 4 victories against 10 losses out of 14 matches, ending at the bottom of the points table. The new captain, Hardik Pandya, struggled to make a significant impact as a leader.
Given this poor performance, Mumbai Indians are expected to shake up their squad before the IPL 2025 auction. While there are key players who are unlikely to be dropped, the team will face some tough decisions. Here, we examine three Mumbai Indians players who might be released prior to the IPL 2025 auction.
Three players Mumbai Indians will release before the IPL 2025 auction.
3. Piyush Chawla-
Piyush Chawla has been a key spinner for the Mumbai Indians over the past two seasons. He was instrumental in the team’s performance during IPL 2023, finishing as the top wicket-taker and helping Mumbai reach the Qualifier 2 match.
In the following season, Chawla delivered a solid performance, claiming 13 wickets in 11 matches. However, as a seasoned spinner, his role may be reconsidered as the Mumbai Indians look to infuse their squad with younger talent. To strengthen their spin department for IPL 2025, the team management might opt to part ways with the experienced spinner.
2. Dewald Brevis-
Dewald Brevis, the promising young South African talent, has been with the Mumbai Indians but has had limited opportunities due to the restrictions on foreign players in the playing XI and the strong batting lineup already in place. As a result, Brevis has spent much of his time on the bench.
During IPL 2024, he featured in only 3 matches and struggled to make a significant impact, accumulating just 69 runs with a standout innings of 46. Given these factors, it is anticipated that Mumbai Indians will release Brevis ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
1. Rohit Sharma-
Rohit Sharma served as the captain of the Mumbai Indians until the end of the 2023 season. For IPL 2024, the franchise handed over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya, with Sharma playing under his leadership. Unfortunately, this change did not yield the desired results, as Mumbai Indians ended up at the bottom of the points table.
With Sharma’s retirement from T20 Internationals and speculation about his potential departure from the MI team, it is possible that the franchise may decide to release him. As Mumbai moves forward with Hardik Pandya as their new captain, they might look to make significant changes, which could include parting ways with Sharma.
