India captain Rohit Sharma addressed Virat Kohli’s struggles in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 ahead of the semi-final against England. He emphasized their support for all players and stressed the importance of individuals making decisions regarding their shot-making.

Virat Kohli, who showcased outstanding form by scoring 741 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore, has faced unexpected challenges in the T20 World Cup. Despite being entrusted with the opening role, he has only managed 66 runs across six innings during the league stage and Super 8 matches, reflecting a disappointing campaign so far.

In the recent match against Australia, Kohli endured a five-ball duck, marking his second duck in the tournament and joining Ashish Nehra as the only Indian cricketers to achieve this in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Regarding Kohli’s form, Rohit Sharma acknowledged the challenging batting conditions and emphasized the importance of adapting to the situation while maintaining a balance between scoring runs and playing responsibly.

Rohit Sharma – I have spoken about experience in this group and we rely on that experience from each player

Rohit Sharma also mentioned that he has discussed the team’s collective experience and empowered each individual to make their own decisions. Regarding his captaincy philosophy, he emphasized the importance of standing by the decisions made once the game begins.

“I think it is important for us to understand the conditions and what we need to do at that time. And I have spoken about experience in this group and we rely on that experience from each player. To go out and make that decision. Whether it is playing the reverse sweep, whether it is bowling a yorker or whether it is bowling a bouncer. We rely on those individuals to make that decision.”

“As a captain or coach, once the game has started, there is hardly you need to talk about what you need to do. Yes, certain aspects of the game, you can discuss but not a whole lot. We got to back them.”

The T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final between India and England is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th, at Providence Stadium in Guyana.
