Matheesha Pathirana reflected on his transformative journey since donning the Chennai Super Kings jersey in the IPL, attributing it as a providential turning point in his career.
Prior to his stint with the franchise, he remained relatively unknown despite his burgeoning talent as a Sri Lankan fast bowler. However, his inclusion in CSK in 2022 proved to be a watershed moment.
Pathirana’s exceptional performance under the astute leadership of MS Dhoni during IPL 2023 underscored his prowess, as he clinched 19 wickets with an impressive economy rate, contributing significantly to CSK’s championship victory.
The experience of rubbing shoulders with stalwarts like Dhoni further bolstered Pathirana’s confidence, elevating his game and visibility within the cricketing fraternity. “After my under-19s, I was not in any squads in Sri Lanka. But since my debut for CSK, I got those chances and got selected for Sri Lanka’s main team. Playing for CSK is a gift from god for me.
“Until I played for CSK, not many knew me. Sharing the dressing room with Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) is very special for youngsters like me, especially coming from Sri Lanka,”
