Following his recent international retirement after Australia’s exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, former opener David Warner has commented on Jake Fraser-McGurk’s potential Test career. Warner, who scored 178 runs in the tournament and was Australia’s second-highest run-scorer behind Travis Head, highlighted Fraser-McGurk as his successor at the top of the order, particularly in white-ball formats. Both players share a natural aggression, preferring to take on bowlers aggressively during the powerplay phase of the game.
David Warner has offered insights into Jake Fraser-McGurk’s potential Test debut, noting that while Fraser-McGurk is expected to receive opportunities in ODIs and T20Is, the timing of his Test debut remains uncertain. Warner advised the young cricketer to concentrate on scoring runs and avoid getting distracted by social media commentary.
Times have changed from when I first started with all these social media things, so hopefully doesn’t read too much into that, just sticks to what he knows best – that’s scoring runs, and that’s the biggest currency you can (have) is score runs,” Warner advised the youngster as quoted by cricket.com.au.
The veteran opener also discussed Jake Fraser-McGurk’s chances of entering Test cricket, suggesting that the young cricketer would need to consistently score significant runs to earn the prestigious Baggy Green cap.
“Will he play Test cricket? I think he’ll have to have a breakout year in the next 12-18 months to prove himself. I think we’ve all had to score hundreds to get your name up there (to) warrant that,” he said.
You have to learn how to play 50 over cricket – David Warner’s advice to Jake Fraser-McGurk
David Warner also acknowledged Jake Fraser-McGurk’s potential in white-ball formats, emphasizing the importance of adapting to and excelling in ODI cricket, much like Warner did earlier in his career.
“He can lock it in. And a bit like myself, you (have to learn) how to play … 50 over cricket. That’s one thing that I learned from Twenty20. I got dropped after seven games because I didn’t really understand how to play the game of one-day cricket,” Warner remembered the time when he was dropped after poor initial returns in the ODI format.
“So from a one-day perspective if he learns that and understands that he’ll have a fantastic career, especially batting in Australia. Best wickets in the world,” the left-handed opener added.
Both David Warner and Jake Fraser-McGurk featured for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. Warner faced challenges with his form and missed several games due to injury. In contrast, Fraser-McGurk had a sensational season, making headlines with 330 runs in just 9 matches at an outstanding strike rate of 234. His impressive performance earned him the accolade for the highest strike rate in the tournament.
