Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India, appears to still be relishing the euphoria of their T20 World Cup 2024 victory. Securing a memorable win over South Africa by 7 runs in Barbados marked the end of an 11-year wait for an ICC title. The triumphant return of the World Champions was celebrated with enthusiasm, including a victory parade in Mumbai and an audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their visit to the national capital.
Earlier this year, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confidently assured Indian cricket fans of a victorious campaign under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, promising to see the Indian flag flying high in the Caribbean. On June 29, history was made in Barbados as India clinched the T20 World Cup, with their captain proudly planting the national flag at Kensington Oval.
In a gesture of national pride, days after this monumental achievement, Rohit updated his profile picture on the microblogging site X to a snapshot of him planting the Indian flag in Barbados, further immortalizing the proud moment for the entire nation.
However, in doing so, the Indian skipper has forfeited his verification badge, commonly known as the blue tick. This is because the X has a clause where the “subscribers will be able to change their handle, display name or profile photo, but if they do they’ll temporarily lose the blue checkmark until their account is reviewed again.”
After experiencing defeat in two ICC event finals within the span of 12 months, Rohit’s Team India finally clinched the trophy in the West Indies. Addressing the post-match presentation last Saturday, the Indian captain attributed the victory against South Africa to the team’s relentless hard work over the past 3-4 years.
“To be honest, we worked very hard as individuals and as a team, a lot has gone on behind the scenes for us to be here today and win this game. It is not what we did today, it is what we have been doing for the last 3-4 years. That’s the result that has come for us today,” Rohit had said.
“We have played lots of high-pressure games in the past as well and have been on the wrong side as well. But the guys understand what needs to be done. Today was the perfect example of when the back is against the wall, what is required. We stuck together as a team,” he added.
