A disappointed David Miller described the T20 World Cup final loss to India as tough to swallow, expressing his feeling of being “gutted”. Despite the setback, the resilient South African team remains determined to keep pushing boundaries.
The Proteas, who had shed their reputation as perennial “chokers”, reached their first unbeaten T20 World Cup final. However, their hopes were dashed in the summit clash as they fell short against India, losing by seven runs.
“I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swalllow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit,” Miller posted an Instagram story late on Monday.
Leading up to the final, the Proteas had a remarkable journey, clinching victories in tense situations and establishing themselves as favorites for the title.
“This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar,” he wrote.
South Africa seemed poised for a memorable victory, requiring 30 runs from 30 balls. However, led by Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian bowlers orchestrated a remarkable turnaround by dismissing key players Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen.
With David Miller at the crease and 16 runs needed from the final over, the Proteas maintained hope.
Yet, hopes were dashed when Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular catch at the boundary dismissed Miller, extinguishing South Africa’s chances of victory.
This match marked South Africa’s closest encounter with a title win, having previously faced seven semifinal exits in ICC global events.
