The number of England cricketers in the IPL has surged over the past five years, and the IPL 2025 mega auction offers an opportunity to add even more. This auction will feature some rule changes.
Prominent England players like Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, and Jason Roy have made significant impacts in the IPL. Phil Salt recently joined their ranks after an impressive season with KKR, and Harry Brook has potential but has yet to fully excel.
In recent discussions between IPL franchises and the BCCI, several key decisions were made. The debate over the number of player retentions was particularly notable.
Teams such as KKR and SRH have advocated for the ability to retain 7-8 players to keep their core group intact after a successful season. Most teams support this change. Additionally, there is a consensus to replace the mega auction with annual mini auctions.
The issue with England players has been their frequent withdrawals from the tournament after signing up. The BCCI is also considering stricter regulations on foreign player participation to address these concerns.
England Legends Who Can Retire From T20s If Not Picked In IPL 2025
Jason Roy
Roy pulled out of the tournament last year citing personal reasons and said that he is looking forward to getting a break after playing extensively throughout last year. It was a blessing in disguise for KKR who roped in Phil Salt in his place and he set the IPL on fire.
Given that Roy has pulled out of the tournament multiple times in the last, IPL franchises might look to avoid buying him.
Jofra Archer
In the last four to five years, Jofra Archer has been very injury probe. He has had difficulties with his elbow that has kept him away from international cricket as well. He missed the ODI World Cup 2023 followed by the T20 World Cup 2024.
He made a comeback to IPL in 2023 playing for the Mumbai Indians but could only play just five games picking up just two wickets.
His best season in the IPL was 2018 and 2020 while playing for the Rajasthan Royals. In case he is not picked up in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Archer can think about retiring from the tournament.
Ben Stokes
Stokes the England Test captain has also been playing in the IPL since 2017. However, he too has been ruled out multiple times due to injury concerns. He last played for CSK in IPL 2023 who invested 16.25 crores to rope him in but he was ruled out with an injury.
With England players previously pulling out of the tournament citing different reasons, the franchise might overlook them in the upcoming auction.
Adil Rashid
Rashid has been one of those underrated spinners who has been overlooked by IPL franchises. He played in IPL 2021 and 2023 for Punjab KIngs who did not invest in the England leggie for a longer run.
Rashid is incredibly successful as a white-ball spinner in international cricket. However, limited opportunities have not allowed his IPL career to flourish. He can look forward to retiring from the format if he goes unsold.
Harry Brook
Brook was roped in by SRH for over 13 crores in IPL 2023. They released him ahead of the IPL 2024 auction and Delhi Capitals roped him in for four crores. However, he did not turn up for the season citing personal reasons.
This attitude of skipping IPL seasons after enrolling themselves in the auction from England players has not been entertained by several franchises. Brook if he does not play in the IPL regularly might run out of favour.
