Former Baroda coach Dav Whatmore has expressed criticism towards Hardik Pandya for his prolonged absence from domestic cricket. Pandya last participated in a first-class match for Baroda back in December 2018 against Mumbai. Since then, his engagements in international cricket or recuperative periods due to injuries have prevented him from representing his state team.
Despite this, Hardik Pandya played a pivotal role in India’s recent victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. His exceptional all-round contributions were instrumental in India’s triumph. Throughout the tournament, Pandya showcased his batting prowess, amassing 144 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 48 and a blistering strike rate of 151.57. Additionally, he proved to be a vital asset with the ball, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 17.36 and an economy rate of 7.64.
Notably, Pandya’s standout moment came during the final match when he bowled the crucial last over, successfully defending 16 runs and securing India’s victory. His over included the crucial dismissal of David Miller, underlining his composure and effectiveness in high-pressure situations.
Dav Whatmore criticizes Hardik Pandya for inadequate participation in domestic cricket.
During an interview with the Pakistani YouTube channel Pak Passion, Dav Whatmore expressed his perplexity regarding Hardik Pandya’s extended absence from representing Baroda, despite hailing from the region. Whatmore shared his confusion over why Pandya has not participated in matches for Baroda for such a prolonged period.
“There are some individuals who don’t play white-ball cricket. For example, my last few years in Baroda, Hardik Pandya wouldn’t ever play white-ball cricket. It always amuses me that he’s termed as the all-rounder from Baroda but he hasn’t played for Baroda for years,” Whatmore said on Pak Passion YouTube channel.
However, Whatmore expressed satisfaction with the BCCI’s recent approach of prioritizing domestic cricket in terms of player selection. He acknowledged that the BCCI has adopted a stringent stance against players opting for IPL over domestic commitments, enforcing strict measures when necessary.
“But recently, I’ve seen that the BCCI have been keen that players participate in Ranji Trophy as well as other two formats to ensure they see cricket as sports. Efforts are made to make sure 4-day cricket is not neglected,” the former Australia cricketer added.
Dav Whatmore’s coaching stint with Baroda
Dav Whatmore served as Baroda’s head coach from 2021 to 2023, bringing his extensive coaching experience to the team. Born in Sri Lanka and raised in Australia since childhood, Whatmore is renowned for coaching Sri Lanka to their historic ICC World Cup victory in 1996. He has also contributed to the IPL as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Reports indicate that Hardik Pandya has been instructed to demonstrate his fitness in the 50-over format by bowling 10 overs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. His performance and fitness evaluation in this match will determine his eligibility for the upcoming Champions Trophy next year.
Recently, Pandya has faced challenges, notably criticism after being appointed captain of the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, replacing the beloved Rohit Sharma, which stirred some backlash from fans.
Despite these challenges, Pandya showcased his talent and resilience in the T20 World Cup, emerging as a standout performer for India. However, concerns persist regarding his recurring injuries and managing his workload, which have been ongoing issues for him.
