Recent memories of the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final are fresh as India and England prepare to face off again in 2024 for a spot in the final. Former England captain Paul Collingwood has cautioned England to approach their upcoming match against India with caution and strategic acumen.
In the previous encounter, India batted first with Virat Kohli scoring his fourth half-century of the tournament and Hardik Pandya providing quick acceleration to reach a total of 168 runs in their 20 overs. However, England’s opening pair of Jos Buttler (80* off 49) and Alex Hales (86* off 47) chased down the target without losing a wicket and finished the match with four overs to spare.
Collingwood believes that replicating such aggressive tactics may not be the ideal strategy for England to overcome the defending champions this time around.
“The previous plan was to attack India aggressively from the start. However, a team like India can’t be surprised by that tactic,” stated Collingwood.
“In 2022, when India batted first, we knew we could restrict them. Back then, India played conservatively, especially in the first 10 overs, and then tried to catch up later. But as we discussed, India’s approach has changed. They understand that this strategy won’t win World Cups. They need to take risks, be brave, and express themselves freely.”
According to Collingwood, India’s formidable batting prowess and deep lineup make them a formidable opponent, particularly if they bat first, posing significant challenges for England.
“Batting first, they could potentially score a total far beyond England’s reach. That’s the exciting thing about this clash. It’s a great prospect for world cricket – two strong teams going head-to-head.”
India secured their spot in the semi-finals by finishing at the top of their Super 8 group, clinching victory against Australia in their crucial final Super 8 match, which left Australia facing elimination.
Meanwhile, England faced a challenging path to the semi-finals, enduring defeats against Australia and South Africa, along with a washed-out game against Scotland. Despite these setbacks, they managed to secure their place in the semi-finals.
