Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s head coach appears imminent. Reports suggest that the BCCI is on the verge of formally announcing him as the new head coach, marking the end of the team’s search for a permanent leader since Rahul Dravid’s tenure concluded with the T20 World Cup.
Dravid had extended his tenure post the ODI World Cup, but the recent tournament signaled the end of his coaching stint. Last month, Gambhir, along with WV Raman, underwent interviews for the coveted role. Gambhir, already considered a frontrunner even before the interviews, solidified his position further upon formally applying for the position.
Adding to the speculation, Gambhir’s recent activities underscore his impending role change. Recently, he visited Kolkata’s Eden Gardens to shoot a farewell video for Kolkata Knight Riders, where he had served as mentor. His successful stint with KKR, culminating in their IPL triumph under his mentorship, further highlights Gambhir’s credentials and readiness to take charge of the Indian team.
“It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message and that is why they shot a video at the Eden,” a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official told the news outlet. The official also confirmed that the video was shot by Gambhir’s personal team and not by KKR as the former cricketer wanted to bid goodbye to the fans with a special personal message.
I would love to coach the Indian team: Gautam Gambhir
Last month in Abu Dhabi, Gautam Gambhir publicly expressed his aspiration to take on the role of Team India’s head coach. During an event, Gambhir shared his eagerness to contribute to the team in this capacity, signaling his keen interest and readiness for the esteemed position.
“Look, I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour.”
Although Gautam Gambhir has not yet coached a state or national team, his reputation has significantly grown due to his impactful role in the IPL. Before joining KKR this year, he served as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants in the preceding two seasons. Under his guidance, the franchise achieved playoff qualifications in both seasons, showcasing Gambhir’s ability to influence and lead teams effectively at the top level of Indian cricket.
