With the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 capturing the Indian team’s attention, a former Indian cricketer has weighed in on Gautam Gambhir’s potential appointment as the successor to Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of the squad.
Gambhir’s recent achievements, particularly his remarkable comeback with the Kolkata Knight Riders leading them to an IPL title, have significantly bolstered his reputation. Notably, he has secured IPL triumphs both as a player and as a mentor.
In an interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI), WV Raman expressed confidence in Gambhir’s aptitude to assume the role of head coach for the Indian team. Raman believes that Gambhir possesses the necessary qualifications to elevate the national team to new heights, given his extensive experience as a former Indian cricketer.
“He will definitely be somebody who knows what to do. What he will deliver and not is something I cannot predict since I don’t have a crystal ball in my hand,” he commented.
“But, as far as his acumen is concerned, he is good. He has also been a good captain in the IPL, and he is a good strategist,” he added.
Raman proposed that beyond Gambhir’s commendable attributes, the ultimate determinant of success lies in how swiftly the team adapts to his coaching style and whether the players are aligned with his methodologies.
“But again, it’s all about things coming together when you are coaching a side and how quickly everybody (coaches) settles down with the boys and the boys with his ways of doing things. So, that’s where the key lies, generally,” he concluded.
The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 marks Rahul Dravid’s final assignment with the team, as the BCCI has yet to announce his successor. The team will soon begin preparations for the tournament, commencing with their opening match against Ireland at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York.
India showcased an impressive performance in their recent warm-up match against Bangladesh, securing a commanding victory by a margin of 60 runs in New York. Standout performances from players such as Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh have likely solidified their positions in the starting eleven for the opening game.
