ICC Champions Trophy Winners List
The ICC Champions Trophy, often referred to as the “Mini World Cup,” was first introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1998. Initially known as the ICC Knockout Tournament, it was held every four years with the primary aim of raising funds for cricket development in countries without Test status. The tournament’s first two editions took place in Kenya and Bangladesh. However, its commercial success eventually led to it being hosted in major cricketing nations such as England and India.
From the 2009 edition onward, the format was revised to feature only the top 8 teams in the ICC ODI rankings, with the cutoff determined six months before the tournament began. After the 2017 edition, the Champions Trophy was discontinued as the ICC decided to focus on having one global tournament for each of the three formats.
In a surprising turn, the ICC announced in 2021 that the Champions Trophy would make a return, with the 2025 edition set to be held in Pakistan and the 2029 edition in India. However, if India refuses to play in Pakistan, they may also choose to avoid traveling across the border for future ICC events.

ICC Champions Trophy History
The ICC Champions Trophy, originally known as the ICC KnockOut Tournament, was launched in 1998 and rebranded in 2002. The tournament was conceived by the ICC to generate funds for cricket development in non-Test playing nations. The first few editions were held in Bangladesh and Kenya, but the event quickly grew in stature and became a major revenue source for the ICC.
ICC Champions Trophy Evolution:
Initially dubbed the “mini-World Cup,” the competition began as a knockout format involving all ICC full members. In 2002, the format shifted to round-robin, though it remained a short tournament, lasting about two weeks. Over time, the number of teams varied, but since 2009, only the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings have participated. The Champions Trophy has been hosted by seven different countries, with England hosting it three times. While the tournament was initially held every two years, it transitioned to a four-year cycle from 2009 to align with the World Cup schedule.
