The ICC stated that it is monitoring the security situation in Bangladesh, where the women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in October.
Amid escalating protests by students demanding reforms to the quota system for government jobs, the Bangladesh Police enforced a curfew, with military forces conducting patrols in Dhaka and other affected areas on Saturday.
“We have independent security monitoring across the world. So, yes, we are keeping a watch on it (the situation in Bangladesh),” an ICC Board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Australia has dominated the women’s T20 World Cup, clinching the title a remarkable six times in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, and most recently in 2023.
In contrast, England and the West Indies have each secured the championship once. Looking ahead, India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, aims to secure their first-ever title in the upcoming tournament.
Currently competing in the Women’s Asia Cup in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, India is utilizing the event as valuable preparation for the ICC showcase, as highlighted by pacer Renuka Singh.
“The Asia Cup is important for us because after this we don’t have many matches (ahead of the T20 WC) and we will have to rely on practice.
“So, this is a learning experience for us, and the conditions (in Bangladesh) could be similar. So, this is a good chance for us to get ready for the World Cup,” she said.
