Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been among the world’s top batsmen for the past decade, excelling across all formats and conditions. They have been the cornerstone of Indian cricket, with both establishing themselves as two of the most decorated batsmen in the nation’s history. After MS Dhoni stepped down as captain, Kohli took over the role until he was succeeded by Rohit Sharma in 2021.
Despite their remarkable performances, which have sparked an ongoing debate about who is superior, former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Zahid has weighed in on the matter. In a discussion on Basit Ali’s YouTube channel, Zahid acknowledged Kohli’s status as one of the world’s best but expressed his belief that Rohit Sharma surpasses him. Zahid further praised Rohit as the current best batsman globally.
Zahid Mahmood opens up on Indian legends
“Nobody can deny Virat Kohli. However, I’d rate Rohit Sharma higher than Kohli. Rohit is the best batsman in the world at present. He is very courageous against fast bowlers. He is a gifted player. He picks the length very quickly, like how Inzaman-ul-Haq used to do,” said Zahid Mahmood.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both in Sri Lanka for the ongoing three-match ODI series. Rohit has been impressive with the bat, scoring two rapid fifties despite India’s lack of victories in the series so far. He struck a 33-ball fifty in the first ODI and followed it with a 29-ball fifty in the second.
In contrast, Kohli has faced challenges in finding his rhythm. The former Indian captain managed only 24 runs in the first game and was out for 14 in the second.
