The Indian men’s cricket team is gearing up to put an end to a 17-year-long trophy drought at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the United States in June.
The Indian men’s cricket team is poised to break a 17-year dry spell without a trophy as they compete in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in the West Indies and the United States in June.
India clinched the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007 in South Africa, led by captain MS Dhoni. However, since that historic victory, the Men in Blue have failed to secure another title in the tournament.
The Indian men’s cricket team last reached the final of a T20 World Cup in 2014 but faced defeat against Sri Lanka in the ultimate showdown. In the 2022 edition, India’s journey ended in the semi-finals with a loss to eventual champions England.
Currently occupying the top spot in the T20I world rankings, India will be under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup in the Americas, with Hardik Pandya serving as the vice-captain.
Key players such as Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav are also part of the squad. Placed in Group A, India will compete against hosts USA, Canada, Ireland, and arch-rivals Pakistan.
India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign kicks off against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. This venue will also host the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan clash on June 9, followed by the match against the USA. The final group match against Canada is scheduled to take place in Florida.
A total of 20 teams are participating in the T20 World Cup 2024, four more than the previous edition in 2022 hosted by Australia. These teams are divided into four groups of five each. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 8 stage, commencing on June 20.
In the Super 8 stage, the eight teams will be split into two groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals scheduled on June 26 and 27.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final is set to take place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 29.
Before the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2024, India secured a convincing victory over Bangladesh in their sole warm-up match, winning by a margin of 60 runs.
