In a notable development, Yuzvendra Chahal may finally make an appearance in India’s upcoming Super 8 match against Australia. Chahal is one of the four spin bowlers included in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

India has already utilized three spinners in the tournament so far: Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who are all-rounders, and Kuldeep Yadav, who specializes in spin bowling.

Following the group stage matches held in New York, where conditions strongly favored fast bowlers, the tournament has now shifted to the Caribbean for Team India.

The spinners have assumed crucial roles in the Caribbean conditions, prompting the Indian team management to include Kuldeep Yadav in the starting lineup.

Will Yuzvendra Chahal get a chance against Australia?

As the tournament progresses towards its decisive stages, the pitches are gradually slowing down. This trend might lead India to consider adding another spinner to their lineup, potentially paving the way for Yuzvendra Chahal to make his appearance in the Playing XI.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of India’s crucial Super 8 clash with Australia, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey emphasized that India’s bowling strategy hinges on the specific venues and pitch conditions.

“It all depends on what surface – I hope the surface won’t be that spinner-friendly I think going in yes three spinners, I think just add the balance but I’m not very sure all the other venues. In case, I’m saying I don’t look like the surface is going to be that dry and going to turn so much,” Mhambrey said.

Mhambrey also highlighted that in case the pitches show considerable wear and tear, India could lean towards including an additional spinner. Therefore, he expressed readiness to entertain the possibility of fielding another spinner in the team.

“But yeah, if the surface is like that, there’s a lot of wear and tear in the wicket Yeah, for a spinner, if you think that’s the best option you want to go and enter the game, you might as well go with it,” India’s bowling coach added.

Spinners have found success in St. Lucia.

St. Lucia has emerged as the most favorable batting venue in the tournament, boasting the highest batting average (28.76) and scoring rate (8.92). Fast bowlers have struggled here, maintaining an economy rate of 9.42, while spinners have fared better, conceding runs at 7.91 per over.

Yuzvendra Chahal earned his place in India’s squad based on strong performances in the IPL. Representing Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, he claimed 18 wickets in 15 matches with an average of 30.33 and an economy rate of 9.41. Given the spin-friendly conditions, his slow leg-spin could prove valuable.

Chahal remains the only spinner in India’s squad yet to play. If he features against Australia, it would mark the inclusion of all spinners from India’s squad in the match.
