Cricket has proven to be more than just a source of entertainment—it has become a catalyst for diplomatic reconciliation. Following Team India’s triumph in the World Cup, there has been a notable shift in the India-Maldives relationship, which had previously soured over political issues. A few months ago, tensions escalated after a Maldivian politician mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media, prompting diplomatic friction.
The repercussions were significant: Indian tourists, including celebrities, began boycotting trips to the Maldives, a popular destination just south of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This boycott gained momentum on social media platforms, affecting Maldives’ tourism industry, a crucial pillar of its economy as an island nation.
However, recent events have turned the tide. The Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism has extended an invitation to the Indian cricket team to celebrate their T20 World Cup victory on Maldivian soil. This gesture not only symbolizes a renewed spirit of friendship but also underscores the power of sports diplomacy in healing rifts between nations.
In response to these developments, the Indian government has also taken steps to bolster tourism in its own Andaman and Nicobar Islands, aiming to provide alternative destinations for Indian travelers in the future. This strategic move not only supports local tourism but also reinforces India’s position as a regional leader in promoting travel and cultural exchanges.
Thus, what began as a controversy over social media posts has evolved into a story of sportsmanship bridging diplomatic gaps, offering hope for stronger ties between India and the Maldives in the future.

Yet, it appears that Indian Cricket could potentially mend the strained relationship in tourism between the two nations. Following their triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) extended a gracious invitation to the Indian Cricket Team to visit the Maldives.
“Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/ Visit Maldives) in collaboration with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) have jointly extended a special and open invitation to the Indian National Cricket Team,” a statement by the duo read.
“We would be honoured to host you and ensure that your stay is filled with memorable moments, relaxation, and bespoke experiences. It would be an immense honour for the Maldives to welcome the Indian Cricket Team and share in the joy of their triumph,” a spokesperson of Maldives tourism told PTI.
“We eagerly await the opportunity to host them, offering the perfect setting for them to create lasting memories of their victory celebration,” he further added.
Following their victorious campaign in the T20I World Cup in the West Indies, Team India encountered some unexpected delays due to weather conditions, extending their stay on the Caribbean island before finally returning home early Thursday morning. Their arrival in Delhi was marked by a spectacular reception, including a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Later, Rohit Sharma and his team celebrated their triumph with a spirited victory parade along Mumbai’s Marine Drive, drawing immense crowds of enthusiastic fans.
Currently on a break, the players from the T20 World Cup squad are considering various options, including an invitation from the Maldives, following a splendid welcome back home. Meanwhile, a secondary team led by Shubman Gill is engaged in a competitive five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe. Looking ahead, Team India is gearing up for an upcoming ODI and T20I series in Sri Lanka, scheduled to commence on July 27.
