India’s wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan recently addressed the reasons behind his absence from the Ranji Trophy despite recommendations from Rahul Dravid and the BCCI. He expressed that participating in domestic cricket during his hiatus didn’t align with his current mindset and objectives.
In the aftermath of a challenging period where Ishan Kishan transitioned from being a regular in the Indian XI to experiencing a setback in both national selection and BCCI’s contract roster, the cricketer opted to step away from the South Africa Tests. This decision prompted advice from then-coach Rahul Dravid and the cricket board itself, stressing the importance of domestic cricket as a pathway back into the national team.
However, Ishan Kishan diverged from these directives, choosing not to represent Jharkhand in domestic fixtures. This move drew criticism from the authorities, who viewed it as defiance and subsequently revoked his annual contract.
Clarifying his stance, Ishan Kishan articulated that his decision was rooted in the belief that participating in domestic tournaments while on a break from international duties would not contribute meaningfully to his career progression. In an interview with the Indian Express, he emphasized the context of his break from international cricket and underscored that committing to Jharkhand would have precluded the need for such a hiatus.
“I took a break and I think it was normal. There is a rule that if you want to make a comeback you must perform in domestic cricket. It is as simple as that. Now, it was very different for me to play domestic cricket as it was not making any sense.
“I was not in a frame of mind to play and that is why I took a break from international cricket. It doesn’t make sense that you take a break from international cricket and then you go and play domestic matches. Fir toh aap international hi khelte (Then I could have continued playing for India).”
I know it’s not going to be easy – Ishan Kishan on a comeback to the Indian team
Ishan Kishan also discussed his ambitions regarding a return to the Indian team. He expressed delight in seeing Rishabh Pant back in action but acknowledged the intense competition that poses challenges for his own comeback. He concluded by affirming his commitment to giving his all on the field and maintaining a positive mindset, choosing not to dwell on the uncertainties of selection.
“It was heartening to see Rishabh back in action. As far as competition goes, you love challenges and when you compete with all the quality cricketers, it enhances your game. And then when you make it you feel like you have earned it.
“I know it’s not going to be easy. But I feel competition gives you that feeling of satisfaction. I enjoy it. I don’t take any stress about it,” he concluded.
