Jasprit Bumrah, the leading pace bowler for Team India, recently discussed a contentious umpiring decision from his career that he still believes was incorrect. Bumrah pointed out that during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough could have ruled in his favor.
In that heart-wrenching final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India fell short against Australia. Despite setting a target of 240 runs, the Indian team could not defend it, and Australia achieved the target with six wickets and seven overs to spare.
Australia’s Travis Head played a pivotal role in the match, scoring a crucial century. His innings of 137 runs from 120 balls, which included 15 boundaries and four sixes, was instrumental. He formed a significant 192-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Marnus Labuschagne, who remained unbeaten on 58 from 110 balls.
When questioned about a controversial umpire decision he still disputes, Jasprit Bumrah referenced a specific call by Richard Kettleborough during the World Cup final. Bumrah noted that Marnus Labuschagne benefited from an umpire’s call in that game. He shared that he often tells Richard Kettleborough that he could have ruled Labuschagne out.
“Right or wrong is different but in the world cup final I got the wicket of Marnus Labuchagne on umpires call. So still whenever I meet Richards, I tell him you could have given that out,” Bumrah said.
During the 28th over of Australia’s innings in the World Cup final, Jasprit Bumrah reviewed an LBW decision against Marnus Labuschagne. The decision, which favored Labuschagne due to the umpire’s call, visibly frustrated Bumrah, who was seen knocking the bails with his cap. At that moment, Australia was at 157 for three.
Despite a remarkable run of ten consecutive wins leading up to the final, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team fell short of the title. In the summit clash, Bumrah secured two wickets, while Mohammed Shami and Siraj each took one. However, spin bowlers Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav were unable to take any wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah is named “Player of the Tournament” in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The Indian cricket team ended their 11-year drought for an ICC trophy by clinching victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, held across the West Indies and the United States. In the final held in Barbados on June 29, India triumphed over South Africa by seven runs. This victory marked Jasprit Bumrah’s first ICC trophy win in his international career.
Bumrah played a pivotal role in securing the trophy for India and was named “Player of the Tournament.” The Gujarat-born pacer claimed 15 wickets throughout the tournament at an exceptional average of 8.27 and a stellar economy rate of 4.18. In the final, he took two wickets for just 18 runs in his four overs.
