In a concerning development for the Indian cricket team, captain and star pacer Jasprit Bumrah sustained an injury on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, January 4.
The ace bowler was forced to leave the field multiple times, managing to bowl just one over after lunch before heading back to the dressing room for treatment. Bumrah was off the field for over half an hour during the crucial New Year’s Test.
Jasprit Bumrah leaves Syndey Cricket Ground
The Indian captain bowled just one over at the start of the session before leaving the field, and has not returned since. It has been confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah underwent a scan at a hospital in Sydney, though there has been no official update on his condition. As of now, India is without their captain on the field at the SCG.
Any injury to Bumrah would be a significant blow for the Indian cricket team, who are fighting to save the New Year’s Test and level the ongoing five-match series in order to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. In the meantime, Sarfaraz Khan stepped in as a substitute fielder for Bumrah.
The injury scare for India surfaced after the 31st over, when Bumrah was forced to leave the field and was replaced by Mohammed Siraj. Currently without their star pacer, India has seen other players step up, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna each taking two wickets.
Live footage from the official broadcasters captured Bumrah leaving the stadium in his training kit, accompanied by two support staff members, on his way to undergo a scan.

Ravi Shastri said on Fox Cricket: “He is going to see some doctors, get scans… we will know more in a little while. We just had a feeling he wasn’t well. This could have a massive bearing on the series.” In his absence, Virat Kohli is leading the Indian team in the Sydney Test.
Unfortunately, the heavy workload has taken a toll on Jasprit Bumrah, who has been India’s most consistent bowler in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. The pacer has likely bowled more overs than any other Indian bowler during the series Down Under.
Bumrah has taken two wickets from his 10 overs in the ongoing New Year’s Test, bringing his total to 32 wickets in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. As for the match, Australia is still trailing by 10 runs, and India needs just one more wicket to wrap up the hosts’ innings in the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 series.
