Joy Bhattacharjya praised Jasprit Bumrah, suggesting that Bumrah’s outstanding performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 deserved the “Player of the Tournament” accolade, regardless of whether India emerged victorious in the final.
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India maintained an impeccable record throughout the T20 World Cup held across the West Indies and the United States of America. Their campaign culminated in a thrilling seven-run triumph over South Africa in Barbados on June 9, securing India’s second T20 World Cup title.
Jasprit Bumrah emerged as a key figure in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, leading the team’s bowling attack with distinction. Throughout the tournament, the right-arm pacer showcased his skill and consistency, ending as the third-highest wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 15 wickets from eight matches. His economy rate of 4.18 highlighted his effectiveness in crucial moments of the marquee event.
In the final showdown of the recently concluded T20 World Cup, Bumrah played a decisive role by conceding only 18 runs and claiming two crucial wickets in his four overs against South Africa. This performance not only contributed significantly to India’s victory but also marked a memorable achievement for Bumrah, securing his first ICC trophy after several near misses in previous tournaments.
How Good Was Jasprit Bumrah In This World Cup – Joy Bhattacharjya
According to Joy Bhattacharjya, Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional performance throughout the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was so outstanding that he would have deserved the Player of the Tournament award even if Suryakumar Yadav hadn’t taken a crucial catch and India ended up losing. Bhattacharjya also mentioned that had South Africa emerged victorious against Rohit Sharma’s team in the final, Heinrich Klaasen would likely have been awarded the Player of the Match accolade for his significant contribution.
“How good was Bumrah in this WC? Lets think of it this way, if SKY had not taken the catch & India lost the match, the winning team would have changed & the POTM would have probably gone to Klassen for changing the course of the game. But Bumrah would still have won Player of the Tournament,” Joy Bhattacharjya wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
In the T20 World Cup final, South Africa, led by Aiden Markram, appeared poised to claim their first title, needing 30 runs from the last five overs. However, the Indian bowlers staged a remarkable comeback. Suryakumar Yadav’s crucial catch of David Miller proved pivotal as India defended 16 runs in the final over to secure victory.
Following their triumph, the Indian team faced unexpected delays in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, which disrupted airport operations and led to flight cancellations. They remained stranded for three days until flights resumed, finally arriving in New Delhi on Thursday morning, July 4.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the victorious Indian squad of the T20 World Cup 2024 to his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi at 11 AM IST on Thursday.
