Team India finds themselves marooned in Barbados following Hurricane Beryl’s rampage. Originally scheduled to depart on Monday after the ICC T20 World Cup final, their plans have been thwarted by the hurricane’s dangerous conditions.
Hurricane Beryl, classified as an extremely hazardous Category 4 storm, has unleashed violent winds, heavy rainfall, and life-threatening storm surges across the Windward Islands after making landfall on Monday. It stands as the strongest hurricane on record to traverse this region since NOAA began recording data in 1851.
Flight cancellations in Barbados, prompted by the perilous weather, have left Team India with no choice but to remain stranded. The players and staff are eagerly anticipating improved conditions that will allow them to return to India and celebrate their monumental victory on home turf.
Jay Shah, BCCI secretary, provided an update amidst the anticipation in India for their cricket heroes’ return with the World Cup trophy. Shah, currently stranded in Barbados with the team, emphasized that the board’s foremost concern is ensuring the safety of the players above all else.
“Like you people, we are also stuck here. First, we need to see how to get the players and everyone out of here safely, and then we will think about the felicitation upon arrival in India,” the BCCI secretary told PTI.
The BCCI had hoped to arrange a chartered flight to evacuate the team from Barbados, but their plans were thwarted by the closure of the airport. According to reports from the news agency, efforts are also underway to evacuate the Indian media stranded in the hurricane-affected area.
Regarding the final match, India secured a thrilling 7-run victory over South Africa to clinch the T20 World Cup title, marking their first win in 17 years since the inaugural tournament in 2007. This latest triumph places India alongside West Indies and England as the only teams to have won the competition twice.
