Buttler showcased an impressive performance in the second T20I, scoring a half-century and earning the Player of the Match award.
England skipper Jos Buttler will be absent from the third T20I against Pakistan in Cardiff due to paternity leave. He has left the squad and returned to London as the arrival of his third child is imminent. Buttler was also absent from the Monday practice session, raising doubts about his availability for the final match of the series before England heads to the West Indies for the T20 World Cup.
In Buttler’s absence, experienced all-rounder Moeen Ali is expected to take charge of the team. This development also suggests Buttler’s availability for the entire T20 World Cup. Ali, who was previously asked about the possibility of assuming the captaincy from Buttler, expressed his intent to maintain continuity and remarked that leading the team would be an honor for him.
“Obviously if it happens, then it’s a great honour – as it always is. I’ll be fine. Nothing will change too much: it’s just taking over from what he’s doing and then when he comes back, he takes over,” Moeen was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games. For me, it’s just whatever will happen, will happen. (Deputising) is not really difficult, to be honest with you, because we speak often, me and Jos. We talk about other things, the team, and all that. We’re on the same page anyway,” he added.
During the series against Pakistan, the first T20I was abandoned due to rain, while England secured a convincing 23-run victory in the second match. With Buttler absent, Jonny Bairstow is expected to partner with Phil Salt as the opening pair. Ben Duckett is on standby and could step in if there’s a decision to keep Bairstow in his current role. Alternatively, if Bairstow retains his position, Sam Curran could be slotted in at number four.
