Indian selectors are actively scouting for proficient left-arm fast bowlers, particularly for white-ball cricket. Currently, Arshdeep Singh and Khaleel Ahmed stand out as the two left-arm pacers in contention for India’s squad.
Arshdeep excelled in the T20 World Cup 2024, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps. Meanwhile, Khaleel Ahmed was part of India’s reserves for the tournament and also showcased his skills against Zimbabwe, taking 3 wickets across 3 matches at an average of 25 and an economy rate of 6.81.
Their youthfulness adds to their appeal for selection, promising a bright future. A strong showing in upcoming domestic fixtures could further enhance their credentials, bringing valuable variety to India’s bowling attack with their unique left-arm angle.
Selectors favor Khaleel Ahmed for white-ball cricket.
As per the TOI report, Arshdeep Singh and Khaleel Ahmed are being evaluated by selectors as potential left-arm bowling choices. With Arshdeep’s substantial experience in white-ball formats, selectors are now eyeing his progression towards red-ball cricket, aiming to include him in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, set to commence on September 5th.
“Arshdeep has moved the ball impressively in white-ball matches for India. He could be asked to play a few domestic red-ball games, starting with the Duleep Trophy on September 5, to enhance his chances of selection for the Australia tour. There’s a real chance that he could be India’s trump card, along with (Jasprit) Bumrah, in Australia,” a source said to TOI.
According to reports, selectors are considering Khaleel Ahmed as a viable choice, particularly in white-ball cricket. Despite debuting in September 2018, Khaleel has featured in only 11 ODIs and 17 T20Is thus far.

However, the 26-year-old made a strong comeback in this year’s IPL, swiftly regaining attention at the national level. With selectors prioritizing a left-arm fast bowling choice, Khaleel Ahmed earned a spot in India’s squad for the Zimbabwe tour.
“In fact, the selectors are keen on another left-arm pace option in the white-ball side at least, which is why Khaleel Ahmed toured Zimbabwe and has been picked for both the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka,” the source added.
Khaleel Ahmed has faced setbacks in his international career, grappling with injuries and inconsistent form. Despite debuting six years ago, he has struggled to secure a permanent spot in any format. Nevertheless, he has been included in India’s T20I and ODI squads for the Sri Lanka tour, where he aims to prove his mettle and establish himself.
