In a notable achievement during the recent match between the Southern Brave and the Trent Rockets in The Hundred Men’s Competition 2024, veteran West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard reached a rare milestone. He became the first player to accomplish this feat in both T20s and the 100-ball format.
Pollard played a pivotal role in securing a hard-fought victory for the Southern Brave at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on August 10. He contributed 45 runs off 23 balls, hitting two boundaries and five sixes, earning him the title of “Hero of the Match.”
At one point, the Southern Brave was in a challenging position at 78/6 with 76 deliveries faced in their chase of 127 runs against the Trent Rockets. They required 49 runs from the last 20 balls to win. Rashid Khan, the leading spinner, had given away 10 runs and taken one wicket in his first 15 deliveries, while Pollard had managed only six runs from his first 14 balls.
Kieron Pollard Becomes First Player To Achieve This Rare Record
Kieron Pollard shifted the momentum decisively in his team’s favor by hitting five consecutive sixes off an over bowled by Rashid Khan. The former West Indies captain launched the 81st ball for a six over mid-wicket, followed by another six over long off. He then blasted three more sixes, reducing the target to 19 runs required from 15 balls.
At 37 years old, Pollard made history as the first player to hit six consecutive sixes in both T20s and The Hundred format. He had previously achieved this feat in a T20I match against Sri Lankan spinner Akila Dananjaya in 2021.
Pollard was dismissed when the team needed 9 runs off 10 balls in the match. He was run out after attempting an unnecessary single. He defended a ball in front of cover, and the substitute fielder, Calvin Harrison, hit the stumps directly. The team chased down the target with a ball to spare as Chris Jordan hit a four.
Chris Jordan Takes Three Wickets With The Ball
In the 24th match of The Hundred Men’s Competition 2024, Trent Rockets captain Lewis Gregory chose to bat first after winning the toss. Tom Banton (30 off 17) and Adam Lyth (16 off 14) put on a 46-run partnership for the opening wicket. However, the team lost Joe Root’s wicket, leaving them at 81/4 after 62 deliveries.
The Trent Rockets struggled with regular wicket losses throughout their innings. Rovman Powell (16 off 14) and Gregory (19 off 17) were unable to build a substantial partnership, while Rashid Khan (5 off 7) and Imad Wasim (2 off 3) also failed to score quickly, preventing the team from setting a competitive total.
Chris Jordan was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for 22 runs in 20 deliveries. Danny Briggs and Jofra Archer each claimed two wickets in the match, while Akeal Hosein took one wicket but conceded 31 runs off his 20 balls.
