Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are set to part ways with KL Rahul ahead of the IPL 2025 season, signaling a search for a new captain. Rahul, currently leading LSG, may not be retained amid reports that surfaced following a tumultuous IPL 2024 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The match, where LSG suffered a significant loss at home, led to owner Sanjiv Goenka expressing his disappointment publicly, sparking speculation about Rahul’s future with the team.
Despite initial tensions, Goenka later extended an olive branch, hosting Rahul for a reconciliatory dinner in Delhi. The meeting appeared to restore harmony between the player and owner, but indications now suggest a change in leadership for the upcoming season.
KL Rahul is expected to depart from LSG before IPL 2025.
Lucknow Super Giants are reportedly not planning to retain KL Rahul for the IPL 2025 mega auction, and even if he is retained, he won’t continue as the team captain. Sources indicate that Rahul has been informed of the team’s decision to look for a new leader.
Speculations suggest Rahul might be considering options outside Lucknow Super Giants. These developments were disclosed by renowned sports journalist Boria Majumdar on his platform X (formerly Twitter).
Will KL Rahul join RCB?
As per a report from Dainik Jagran, the 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is rumored to be in talks to join Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the upcoming season. Should Rahul make the move to RCB, he would be returning to the franchise where he began his IPL journey back in 2013.
Interestingly, Rahul is seen as an ideal candidate for the captaincy at RCB, given their current need for a new leader. With Faf du Plessis nearing 40 years of age, the team is reportedly seeking an experienced captain who can lead them effectively going forward.
Moreover, Rahul’s improved wicketkeeping skills over recent seasons make him a valuable asset in that department for RCB. With Dinesh Karthik having retired, Rahul could seamlessly step into the wicketkeeper’s role for the team.
