Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has emerged as a leading candidate to become the head coach of England’s white-ball teams.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Sangakkara, currently the head coach of Rajasthan Royals, is the top choice for the position.
The role of head coach for England’s white-ball teams has been vacant since Matthew Mott’s resignation, following a disappointing performance by the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. England, the defending champions, were knocked out by India in the semi-finals and struggled during the league stage.
Mott’s tenure came under scrutiny due to the team’s underwhelming performance, leading to his resignation despite his belief that he was the right person for the job.
Since Mott’s departure, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been searching for a new head coach. Marcus Trescothick is currently serving as the interim coach for England’s upcoming tour of Australia in September.
Several names are being considered for the role, including red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting, and Kumar Sangakkara.
Kumar Sangakkara favourite to become England’s coach
Kumar Sangakkara is emerging as the leading candidate for the head coach position of England’s white-ball teams.
A key challenge for the ECB is finding a coach who can remain in the UK, as many candidates have concerns about being away from their families and relocating. Sangakkara, however, is already based in Dorset, making relocation unnecessary for him. He has shown interest in the role, describing it as “an exciting prospect.”
Sangakkara has a strong relationship with ECB managing director Rob Key, with whom he has collaborated on Sky Sports. His track record as a coach is noteworthy, including leading Rajasthan Royals to the IPL 2022 final after the mega auction. This experience, coupled with his favorable circumstances, positions him as a top contender for the role.
Additionally, Sangakkara has a good rapport with England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, as they are both associated with the same IPL franchise. This connection further strengthens Sangakkara’s candidacy for the position.
