Marcus Stoinis appointed as Melbourne Stars captain replacing Glenn Maxwell
The Melbourne Stars have announced Marcus Stoinis as their new permanent captain, taking over from fellow allrounder Glenn Maxwell, who stepped down at the end of last season. Stoinis becomes the Stars’ seventh full-time skipper in the team’s history.
Stoinis, who stepped in as captain during a game last year in Maxwell’s absence, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and embraced the responsibility of leading the team moving forward.”I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in maxwell’s absence last year and loved the opportunity, so to be given the role full time is a great honour,” Stoinis Added.
“The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years and I truly believe with the group we have assembled this season both on and off the field we can bring some long overdue success to the club,” Stoinis Said.
Maxwell, who took over as captain of the Stars ahead of the 2018-19 season, guided the team to two finals, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. Despite being on track for a finals berth last season, the Stars experienced a late-season slump, missing out on the playoffs. Maxwell captained the team for five seasons, though he missed the 2022-23 campaign due to injury. He holds the records for most appearances (103) and most matches as captain (65) for the franchise.
Stoinis, a long-standing member of the Stars, is just two games shy of becoming the second player to reach 100 appearances for the team. Having signed a three-year extension at the end of last season, Stoinis is also the Stars’ all-time leading run-scorer with 2,656 runs to his name.
“I want to acknowledge and thank Maxwell for all his efforts in leading the side over the past five seasons and he will continue to be a wonderful resource for everyone at the club,” Stars manager Blair Crouch Added.
“Marcus demonstrated his leadership ability last year and has been a part of our leadership for a long time. It’s wonderful to have someone who has been at the Stars almost from our inception lead our club in BBL 14,” he Said.
Stoinis’s tenure as full-time captain will begin with the season opener against the Perth Scorchers at their home ground on December 15.
