Michael Bevan, the legendary finisher, has been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, despite not meeting the usual criteria set by the governing committee. In a rare move, the rules were bent to make way for Bevan’s inclusion.
Regarded as one of the greatest finishers in the history of the game, Bevan played a pivotal role in many of Australia’s iconic victories. Time and again, he steered his team to triumphs, even when they found themselves in seemingly insurmountable situations.
The left-hander was a standout white-ball cricketer, playing crucial roles in Australia’s historic victories in two ODI World Cups. Batting in the middle and lower order, he was part of a lineup widely considered the greatest to have ever graced white-ball cricket.
Michael Bevan Finally Elevated to Australia’s Hall of Fame
Michael Bevan was a key figure in Australia’s ODI World Cup triumphs in 1999 and 2003, yet despite his world-class credentials, he had not been inducted into the Hall of Fame until now.
Although eligible for 15 years, Bevan’s limited Test career, with only 18 appearances, had held him back. The Hall of Fame committee had previously overlooked him due to his modest Test record. However, his outstanding white-ball performances ultimately compelled the committee to reconsider.
With his exceptional ODI stats in mind, the committee decided to revise the selection criteria. Hall of Fame chairman Peter King emphasized that they now aim to recognize players who have excelled in both formats, including white-ball cricket.

“It was Michael’s exceptional playing record and public standing that pushed the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame Committee to review its selection criteria,” King stated.
“To ensure players who excelled in one-day or Twenty20 Internationals were equally recognised as those who shone in the Test format. Michael (Bevan) without a doubt revolutionised white-ball cricket and became a household name for his masterful batting, amazing athleticism and ability to chase down runs,” he added.
