Former England captain Michael Vaughan shared his insights on the prospects of the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Vaughan highlighted the depth and quality within the Indian squad as they prepare to face South Africa in the tournament final.
The T20 World Cup final between India and South Africa will take place at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. The highly anticipated match is set to commence at 10:30 AM local time (8:00 PM IST). Notably, both teams enter the final without having suffered a defeat in the World Cup thus far.
Michael Vaughan expressed on X (formerly Twitter) that if India manages to secure victory today, they would likely claim the World Cup trophy. Vaughan noted that it has been a decade since India last won a major trophy and suggested that this win could mark the beginning of a prosperous era for the team.
“I feel if India get the job done today they are going to go on a trophy winning spree .. they have so much quality in and out of this squad .. Its been 10 yrs since they won a trophy and this one could lead to quite a few over the next years .. #T20WC2024Final,” Vaughan tweeted.
The Indian team secured their spot in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding 68-run victory over England in the second semifinal held in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. Meanwhile, South Africa advanced to the final by defeating Afghanistan with a comprehensive nine-wicket win in the first semifinal in Trinidad.
However, there’s concern that rain might disrupt the final match scheduled in Barbados. Should the highly anticipated match be washed out, both teams would be declared joint winners under ICC rules, requiring a minimum of 10 overs per side to be bowled. A reserve day has been scheduled for June 30 if the match cannot be completed on the original day.
According to clause 13.7.3.6 of the ICC’s playing conditions for the 2024 T20 World Cup final, an additional 190 minutes are allocated for both the final day and its reserve day. However, the preference remains to finish the match on the initially scheduled day, as specified in clause 13.6.2.2.
According to clause 13.6.2.2. of the ICC’s playing conditions for the 2024 World Cup, “If the reserve day is allocated, every effort will be made to complete the match on the scheduled day with any necessary reduction in overs taking place and only if the minimum number of overs necessary to constitute a match cannot be bowled on the scheduled day will the match be completed on the reserve day.”
