On Tuesday (June 11), Mohammad Amir showcased a stellar performance with the ball, leading Pakistan to a crucial victory against Canada in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Facing a must-win situation after losing their initial two matches in the tournament, Pakistan relied heavily on Amir’s brilliance. The seasoned pacer delivered a standout performance, earning the Player of the Match accolade and securing a vital win for his team.
In the match, Pakistan’s bowlers effectively contained Canada’s batting lineup, limiting them to a modest total of 106 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Apart from opener Aaron Johnson, who managed a noteworthy 52 runs from 44 balls, Canada struggled to make significant contributions with the bat.
Mohammad Amir emerged as the standout performer for Pakistan, conceding just 13 runs and claiming two crucial wickets in his four overs. He provided the breakthrough by dismissing opener Navneet Dhaliwal before removing captain Saad Bin Zafar as well.
Despite his outstanding contribution to Pakistan’s victory, Amir faced unwarranted criticism from some Pakistani fans. In a viral video circulating on social media, a group of fans wearing Pakistan jerseys can be seen directing ‘fixer’ jibes at Amir as he made his way back to the dressing room after the game. Visibly upset, Amir responded to the taunts before walking away.
In 2011, Mohammad Amir received a five-year ban from the ICC due to his role in the notorious spot-fixing controversy during the Lord’s Test against England in 2010. This incident also led to bans for former Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt. However, while Amir eventually returned to international cricket after serving his suspension, Butt and Asif did not have the opportunity to do so.
As Pakistan prepares to face Ireland in their last league match, they find themselves in a must-win situation to keep their hopes alive in the competition.
