Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni recently opened up about his experiences with Virat Kohli, both on and off the field. Dhoni expressed his enjoyment in batting alongside Kohli during the middle overs of matches, highlighting how much he relished their time together.
Dhoni and Kohli are widely regarded as two of the greatest cricketers in modern Indian cricket. Kohli’s international debut came in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2008, where he played under Dhoni’s captaincy. The two cricketers teamed up for the Indian national side for over a decade.
Kohli initially served as Dhoni’s vice-captain before eventually taking over as captain of the Indian team in all formats. Dhoni later played under Kohli’s leadership towards the end of his career, with his final appearance for India being in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2019.
We Make Sure That We Go On The Side – MS Dhoni
At a recent event, MS Dhoni spoke about his enjoyable relationship with Virat Kohli. Dhoni noted that although they don’t see each other often, they make an effort to connect and have conversations whenever they can.
“We have been colleagues who played for India for a very long time. He (Kohli) has been amongst the best when it comes to world cricket. And the fact that I could bat a lot with him during the middle overs was a lot of fun because we used to take a lot of twos and threes in the game, so it has always been fun. It’s not like we meet very often, but whenever we get a chance, we make sure that we go on the side and chat for some time, we’ll talk about what is going on, so that is our relationship,” Dhoni said.
Virat Kohli ranks third among the all-time leading ODI run-scorers, amassing 13,848 runs from 292 matches at an average of 58.68, including 50 centuries. In comparison, MS Dhoni has accumulated 10,773 runs in ODIs with an average of 50.58. Kohli was instrumental in Team India’s triumphs in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, both of which were achieved under Dhoni’s captaincy.
MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020.
MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli last played together for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup in England. Kohli led the team as captain, while Dhoni served as the wicketkeeper. India performed exceptionally well in the league stage but was defeated by New Zealand by 18 runs in the semi-final at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on July 9.
Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket a year later. Since then, the two have competed against each other in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have faced off in numerous thrilling encounters in the popular T20 league.
