Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has finally addressed the disappointment following the team’s defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2024. He shared his thoughts ahead of Pakistan’s first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.
In a closely contested low-scoring match where Pakistan held the upper hand for much of the game, they fell short while chasing a modest target of 120 runs. Despite being in a strong position at 57-1, Pakistan lost their way as they lost wickets in quick succession.
The middle order struggled against disciplined Indian bowling, particularly from Jasprit Bumrah, who was named Player of the Match for his figures of 3-14. Pakistan was restricted to 113-7 in 20 overs, falling short by 6 runs. This defeat was significant as it led to Pakistan’s elimination from the group stage of the tournament.
Naseem Shah finally addresses his feelings regarding the T20 World Cup 2024 loss to India.
In an interview with Cricbuzz ahead of Pakistan’s Test series against Bangladesh, Naseem Shah reflected on Pakistan’s loss to India in the T20 World Cup 2024. The 21-year-old fast bowler shared his deep disappointment over Pakistan’s elimination from the tournament.
“Though I was not being targeted by the fans or the media, one cannot be satisfied and say I did my bit after your team losses. I am a person who wants to win. I get disappointed even when I lose while playing at home or in my street. I play to win and the World Cup exit pained me a lot,” Naseem said.
“People come up to me in restaurants and ask me why we lost. Even my relatives have asked about it. I understand their sentiments are driven by social media and, as a player, all I can do is listen to them,” he added.
Pakistan’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2024
Following their defeat to India, Pakistan secured victories in their subsequent matches against Canada and Ireland. However, these wins proved insufficient as they were eliminated from the tournament after the USA edged past them in Group A.
Pakistan had previously experienced a surprising loss to the USA in a Super Over, adding to their troubles before the match against India. Ultimately, it was India and the USA that advanced from Group A.
Naseem Shah remains optimistic about his return to form.
Nonetheless, Naseem Shah remains optimistic about turning the situation around and regaining the support of Pakistan fans. He is determined to view the defeat as a learning opportunity and is eager to make a strong comeback.
“There are times when you feel that you cannot put up with it anymore. But, it also burns a desire for a comeback. People had many questions to ask and there was a lot of frustration in them, which is understandable. Now, we have an opportunity to win the hearts again by playing good cricket,” the young quick said.
Naseem Shah is set to feature in Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The first Test is scheduled to commence on August 21 in Rawalpindi, with the second Test also taking place at the same venue, starting on August 30.
