Babar Azam’s Pakistan faced a tumultuous situation after suffering yet another setback in the T20 World Cup, this time against Team India. The green-clad squad endured a 6-wicket loss on Sunday, marking their second consecutive defeat in the ongoing tournament. Amidst relentless criticism, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi expressed strong disapproval.
Naqvi delivered a scathing critique of the team management, emphasizing the urgent need for significant changes following the team’s narrow defeat against arch-rivals India in New York on Sunday.
“I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery,” Naqvi was quoted as saying by the Pakistani media in New York.
The PCB chief also suggested that it’s time to consider players who have been on the sidelines for an extended period.
“It is very disappointing the way we lost to the USA and now this loss to India. We need to now start looking at players beyond those in the team right now,” he added.
Naqvi, who assumed the role of chairman in January and later took on the additional responsibility of interior minister in the government, emphasized that the PCB had spared no effort in providing support to the players.
“Why the team is not performing is something everyone is asking. The World Cup is still on. But obviously, we will sit down and take a look at everything,” he concluded.
Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the Super Eight stage now depend on securing convincing victories against Canada and Ireland, alongside the requirement for the USA to lose against India and Ireland. Even if this scenario unfolds, both teams would finish with four points each, necessitating a comparison of net run rates to determine qualification.
