Young SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Nitish Reddy recently shared his aspirations regarding a future role with the Indian national cricket team. He expressed his readiness to step into a position akin to that of Hardik Pandya, who serves as vice-captain in India’s limited-overs squads.
Hardik Pandya has been a linchpin in India’s white-ball setup for several seasons, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. His pivotal performance in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 showcased his crucial role, where he bowled key overs to secure India’s victory and their second T20 World Cup title.
During IPL 2024, Nitish Reddy emerged as the recipient of the Emerging Player of the Year award for his impressive contributions. He amassed 303 runs in 13 innings at an average of 33.67 and a striking rate of 142.92. Additionally, he claimed three wickets with an economy rate of 11.62. Reddy was on track to make his debut on India’s tour to Zimbabwe but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.
Won’t Be Getting The Chance At The Top Order – Nitish Reddy
Speaking to NDTV, Nitish Reddy divulged his ambitions within the Indian cricket team, hinting at a role comparable to Hardik Pandya’s. He indicated a readiness to potentially occupy the batting positions around number 6 or 7. However, Nitish emphasized his adaptability, willing to adjust his batting order according to the team’s strategic needs.
“There’s a chance I’ll get to play at no. 7 or no. 6, most likely a Hardik Pandya role. I’m flexible to bat wherever I’m asked to, but as of now I’m preparing for the role that Hardik Pandya is playing,” said Reddy.
At 21 years old, Nitish Reddy acknowledged the challenge of securing a top-order position in the near future, recognizing the presence of seasoned players ahead of him. He underscored his preparedness to adjust to any role required of him, attributing his adaptability to his rich experience in domestic cricket.
“If you ask me to open, I’ll open as well. In the near future, I won’t be getting the chance at the top order because there are more experienced players. I have to adapt to whatever role I’ll get, and I’ve been prepared to adapt this way by domestic cricket,” Reddy added.
My Inspiration Is Virat Kohli – Nitish Reddy
Nitish Reddy shared his enthusiasm for being appointed as a brand ambassador for Puma, a brand also endorsed by his idol, Virat Kohli. He highlighted the significance of stepping up, particularly with senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from T20 internationals, creating new opportunities.
“I’m happy that there is a progression for youngsters who are performing well. After Rohit bhai (Rohit Sharma), Virat bhai (Virat Kohli) and Jaddu bhai (Ravindra Jadeja)’s retirements, there will be opportunities for youngsters. We need to grab them.”
“My inspiration is Virat Kohli, so I’m really proud to be a part of Puma. Puma really supported me through the IPL, and the greatest thing is that they’re providing opportunities to youngsters like myself and Riyan Parag.”
Following their victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja decided to retire from the shorter international format. The Men in Blue clinched their first ICC trophy in 11 years with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29th.
