As National Sports Day becomes a key event on our calendar, ICC Chairman Jay Shah took to social media to honor Indian athletes and emphasize Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy. Celebrated on August 29, National Sports Day marks the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, a legendary figure in Indian hockey.
The day celebrates Major Dhyan Chand’s achievements and the contributions of other Indian athletes to sports. Known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” Dhyan Chand was instrumental in securing three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936.
Since its inception, National Sports Day has gained significant importance. On this occasion, newly-appointed ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his support and admiration through social media, extending his best wishes to all Indian athletes dedicated to achieving excellence in their respective fields.
“On this National Sports Day, I warmly commend our athletes, coaches, and everyone who has devoted their life to sports,” Shah wrote on Instagram.
“As we honor the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary, let’s commit ourselves to making India a powerhouse on the global sporting stage!”
On Tuesday, the global cricket body announced that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will succeed Greg Barclay as the new ICC Chairman. Shah, at 35, will be the youngest person to lead cricket’s global governing body and the fifth Indian to hold the position, following Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day.
“Greetings on National Sports Day. Today we pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. It is an occasion to compliment all those passionate about sports and those who have played for India,” Modi said on X.
“Our Government is committed to supporting sports and ensuring more youth are able to play and shine,” the prime minister said.
